Your Safety is Our Priority

At Ottawa Punjabis, we're committed to creating a safe environment for our community. While we facilitate connections, your personal safety is ultimately your responsibility. Please follow these guidelines to protect yourself and others.

General Safety Principles

Trust Your Instincts

If something feels wrong or makes you uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation. Your intuition is your best safety tool.

Protect Personal Information

Never share sensitive information like your home address, financial details, or government ID numbers until you've established trust.

Tell Someone Your Plans

Always let a friend or family member know where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to return.

Rideshare Safety

For Passengers

  • Verify the driver: Confirm the vehicle make, model, and license plate before entering
  • Check ratings: Review the driver's profile and ratings from previous passengers
  • Share trip details: Use our trip sharing feature to let friends track your ride
  • Sit in the back: For added personal space and safety
  • Trust your gut: If you feel unsafe, ask to be let out in a safe, public location

For Drivers

  • Screen passengers: Check passenger ratings and reviews before accepting rides
  • Meet in public: Arrange pickups in well-lit, public areas
  • Secure valuables: Keep personal items locked in the trunk or out of sight
  • Set boundaries: Clearly communicate your car rules regarding music, food, etc.
  • Trust your instincts: Don't hesitate to cancel if you feel uncomfortable

Accommodation Safety

For Guests

  • Research the area: Look up the neighborhood safety before booking
  • Video call first: Request a video tour and meet your host virtually
  • Read reviews carefully: Pay attention to reviews from previous guests
  • Inspect upon arrival: Check locks, emergency exits, and overall safety
  • Keep emergency contacts handy: Save local emergency numbers and embassy contacts

For Hosts

  • Screen guests: Review profiles and communicate extensively before accepting
  • Secure personal items: Lock away valuables and personal documents
  • Set clear house rules: Establish expectations for guests, visitors, and noise
  • Meet in person first: Consider meeting potential guests in a public place
  • Trust your judgment: Decline any guest that makes you feel uncomfortable

Meeting Safety

Choose Public Locations

Always meet in well-populated, public places for initial meetings. Coffee shops, community centers, or mall food courts are excellent choices.

Arrange Your Own Transportation

Drive yourself or use public transportation for first meetings. This gives you control over when you leave.

Set Time Limits

Plan shorter meetings initially and have a "hard stop" time that you've communicated to someone else.

Online Safety

  • Use our messaging system: Keep communications on our platform until you establish trust
  • Be wary of scams: Never send money or financial information to people you haven't met
  • Protect your accounts: Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication
  • Report suspicious behavior: Immediately report users who make you feel uncomfortable or violate our guidelines
  • Verify information: Cross-check details people share with public information when possible
